A London Garden 2 May 2007

Glorious weather, the best for over a century, has blessed the last 2 weeks and with the arrival of May, everywhere is in bloom.

Wisteria drips from house walls, clematis climbs along garden walls and in my backgarden the first roses of summer have blossomed. Their powdery sugary aroma fills the house as the west winds blow the scent in through the open windows.

The dawn chorus regularly wakes us to a clear blue sky.

Only one cloud mars the sky - something is eating all my newly planted bulbs and shrubs. I planted some patio bulbs in a container - dug up and eaten the same night, transplanted tomato seedlings in peat pots into larger flowerpots in the garden -  dug up and the peat pots torn open, stood sunflower seedlings to harden off on the BBQ - tray overturned and rootled through. All done overnight.

The patio bulbs were right next to the glass back door of the conservatory and we retire late but we didn't see the culprits at work.

What is it? A fox, a badger, rats, noctural squirrels? Whatever it is can climb as the sunflower seedlings were several feet off  the ground on the BBQ.

Meanwhile I have installed an ultrasonic pet scarer in the garden overlooking the surviving tomato plants and will report back on its effectiveness.
