The storms which battered the UK on the 18th January 2007, and wrecked the MSC Napoli off the Devon Coast (see our stories in "World Around Us" and "Culture and History") also took their toll on London.

Roofs were ripped off across the capital with sections of the roof of Lord's cricket ground scattered across the pitch and sections of the glass overhead canopy at London Bridge station sent crashing onto the concourse below.

Everywhere trees were topped, including a tree in the park in south west London near where On the Lam team member Gus had parked his car while he went snow boarding in Austria.

As you can see from the photos that the ferocity of the wind was so strong that it split the tree which toppled over the road onto Gus's car and pretty much demolished it.  All across the capital the same scene was repeated.

Goodbye little red car, faithful friend.
