Country legend Willie Nelson has collaborated with 31-year-old singer/songwriter Ryan Adams on his new album, "Songbird."
Just out on Lost Highway, the 11-track set was produced by Adams, whose band the Cardinals back Nelson throughout. Veteran harmonica player Mickey Raphael also appears. The track list features covers of Gram Parson's "$1000 Wedding," Christine McVie's "Songbird," the Jerry Garcia/Robert Hunter favourite "Stella Blue" and Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah."
The country legend pushed the envelope last year, teaming with alt-rocker Ryan Adams for his October release, "Songbird." The record comprises covers including Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah," Gram Parsons' "$1000 Wedding" and the title track written by Christine McVie, plus new renditions of Nelson classics like "Sad Songs and Waltzes," and two new originals.
"I knew our coming together was going to be something different," Nelson said of working with Adams in a press release. "We came from extremely different places, and we didn't always agree. But it was an experiment, and now that it's done, I think it's real strong."
A couple of songs from "Songbird" are streaming at Nelson's MySpace page.
Another recent successful pairing to top the country charts has been that of Jack White (White Stripes and the Raconteurs) and Loretta Lynn with the Jack White produced best-selling album Van Lear Rose.
