Sad to hear of the recent death of model, rock chick, singer and all-round hedonist Jo Jo Laine.
Born Joanne LaPatrie in Boston, USA in July 1953, Jo Jo life lived in the fast line with the foot pedal pressed flat on the floor. Early lovers included Jimi Hendrix (to whom she lost her virginity backstage at Woodstock in 1969), Rod Stewart, Jim Morrison and Wings (and Moody Blues) guitarist Denny Laine. During her rock chick years, Jo Jo performed as a backing singer and partied as a groupie, consuming heroic quantities of drugs.
Jo Jo married Denny Laine in 1978 and the couple bought Yew Corner in Sussex (the inspiration for A A Milne’s Pooh Corner) where her parties became the stuff of legend. They had a son and a daughter but Jo Jo took to drink and anti depressants following a series of domestic tragedies involving her family in America and the marriage broke down. In its aftermath she took to drink and antidepressants. Later affairs included one with Peter O’Donohue by whom she had another son.
In 2003 she was diagnosed with liver cancer but her deteriorating health did not diminish her party spirit . The same year she shocked the gathering at a book launch in the Cabinet War Rooms by engaging in a “sex romp” with trans-sexual performer Sasha de Suinn. Jo Jo died on 29 October, aged 53, after falling down a flight of stairs.
