Freak Lightning kills 16 highland cows
A single lightning strike killed 16 cows as they sheltered under a tree at a farm in East Lothian in Scotland on 14th June.

The beef cattle were staying out of the rain at Saltoun Home Farm, near Pencaitland, on Sunday afternoon when lightning struck one of them.

It is thought the cow was standing in a puddle, and the water conducted the bolt to the other animals.

Maritime Matters

Wreck of HMS Victory 'recovered from Channel'
The shipwrecked predecessor to Lord Nelson's HMS Victory, which is thought to contain millions of pounds' worth of gold, is thought to have been found at the bottom of the English Channel.

Naval historians have expressed concern that the British Government might be planning to "do a deal" with Odyssey over the contents of the wreck, which is officially a war grave and therefore inviolable in law.

Topiary Elephants Troop into Wales
OK so it is a flight of fantasy rather than a folly but what a flight!

Inspired by a visit to the Masai Mara Game Reserve in Kenya, Brecon resident Gavin Hogg has sculpted the overgrown hedge around his garden into a herd of topiary elephants.

Poem of the Month

Poem for May 2009
"The wind is tossing the lilacs,
The new leaves laugh in the sun,
And the petals fall on the orchard wall,
But for me the spring is done.

Beneath the apple blossoms
I go a wintry way,
For love that smiled in April
Is false to me in May."

Sara Teasdale, "May"
